Arguably one should be attracted to utopian ideas in architecture and repelled by their dystopian counterparts - designs propelled by utopian ideas that actually get built but fail to deliver a better living experience.

I personally feel almost the opposite: utopian ideas - ostensibly something to aspire to - scare or almost repulse me whereas I feel strangely attracted to urban dystopia.

This body of work is in part influenced by the aesthetic of sci-fi films - a genre I could largely do without for its predictable and tedious wars between aliens, robots and humans. Rather, it is the sets that present an irresistible attraction and source of inspiration.

This informs my desire to create my own dystopian worlds.

The “deep space“ series represents worlds that are governed by silence and loneliness. Worlds in which human dwellings cling like barnacles onto giant fungi – and pieces of our own waste, including the ubiquitous Amazon plastic bags turned inside-out. A universe in which humans are either marginalized by their own doing or are extinct. A universe in which life, not without beauty, continues in the form of fungi coexisting with our refuse.
